There are two ingredients for human happiness, these two are compassion and wisdom.
* Compassion is love, charity, kindness and tolerance. it is acting out of love and concern for all that live.
* Wisdom is seeing things are, and acting out the noble qualities of the mind.
Here the additional thought from dhammananda;
* Pleasure is not the same as happiness. pleasure is a passing show and does not offer lasting happiness. Pleasure can be bought, but not happiness.
* happiness comes from within, based on the foundation for simple goodness and clear conscience.
* if you want to live peacefully and happily, allow others also to live peacefully and happily.
* you cannot hope to gain happiness and peace by simply praying. you have to work to gain such blessing.

How you feel about yourself is like having personal bank account (PBA), an interesting and well-written book for the younger set. When you stick to a commitment, for example, you feel good about yourself, and its like putting in a deposit. When you break a promise, then it is like a withdrawal. There are certain act which, when done, increase our PBA deposit, that is, we feel better about our selves. If we do opposite, we withdraw , and our self-esteem goes down.
Here are some suggestions on how to increase your PBA
Keep promise to yourself.
Start with small promises that you know you can do and do them. You will build trust in your self.
Do small acts of kindness.
When you do some selfless acts for others, you feel wonderful. Its hard to be depressed when you are helping others. Say hello to loneliest person you know. Write a thank you note to someone who made difference to your life.
Be gentle with yourself.
This means many things, such as not expecting yourself to be perfect by tomorrow . It also means learning to laugh at our mistakes. Learn from our mistakes, drop them and move on.
Be honest.
First, this means self-honesty - being authentic rather than pretending to be someone other than pretending to be someone other than what you really are. Then it means honesty in our actions, whether at school, with parents, or with your boss. Remember you cant do wrong and feel right.
Renew yourself.
You need to take time for yourself, to renew and relax; otherwise you lost your zest for life. It also means finding a refuge, a sanctuary where you can renew your spirits. Or doing other activities like exercise, playing guitar, painting, etc.
Tap into your talents.
One of the single greatest deposits you can make in your in your PBA is by finding and developing a talent, a hobby or special interest. It does not matter what it is : whether its chess-playing, dramatics, or butterfly collecting. It is a form of self-expression that builds self esteem.
